![]() VIP is proud to report that we have received a $4,000 grant from the Sundt Foundation to support the VIP Scholarship Program. With this generous grant, VIP will be able to give another 40 hours of free therapy through our scholarship program! Sundt has been dedicated to improving the communities where it operates. Jeff wrote his story for a reunion and it is inspiring! Read below: ![]() On December 15 th 2013, life as I knew it, changed forever. It started as a normal enough day, once I got to work, I started to feel tired and sick. I thought I was coming down with the flu, right before the holidays no less. I grabbed my things, told my boss I was going home sick, and I'd be back in a few days. I then proceeded to drive 20 miles home on the freeway. To this day, I don't remember much of the drive. Once I arrived home, a quick thinking family member realized the truth --- I was having a stroke. 911 was called, ems's arrived & I was taken to Grossmont hospital. After running a series of tests, I was admitted to the ICU. My prognosis was not good. I had lost everything, toes to nose, on my right side. I couldn't even swallow. After 7 days, I'd improved enough to be transferred to the neuro unit. After 5 days, on Christmas Day, I was sent to inpatient rehab. That started 6 weeks of intense therapy, speech, PT, OT, etc. Finally, on February 7th, I was discharged home. In a wheel chair. Months later, I would learn that I actually had 4 bilateral strokes. The cause has never been determined, despite extensive testing and numerous doctor visits. I started outpatient therapy a few days later. Three days a week, 3 hours a day. I continued to improve. I was able to trade the wheelchair for a cane and leg brace. On November 11th, 2014, I returned to work part time. I'm very lucky to have such a great employer. Fast forward, to today, I'm working about 20 hours a week and still in therapy. I'm blessed to be able to go to VIP Neuro rehab. It would have been easy to give up and focus on what I'd lost. Instead, I used what I did have left to improve. Remarkably, my cognitive skills weren't damaged -- I couldn't speak, but I was texting away in the neuro unit. It's been a battle and the improvements have at time been slow in coming. Luckily, I'm rather stubborn. A cousin told me that you don't really miss things until they're gone. How true! Learning to function as a one handed lefty has been a real challenge. So has the near constant fatigue. My outlook on life has changed dramatically. I'm more grateful than ever now. One day at a time, one step at a time. ![]() VIP is proud to share about one of our latest scholarship patients, Keith! Keith was refereed to VIP by Living Spinal and we are privileged to have him join us. Keith suffered a spinal cord injury in a motorcycle accident, 10 years ago, while volunteering in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Since then, he has not slowed down! He enjoys playing sports, such as tennis and lacrosse. Keith was the SD Wheelchair Tennis Director and builds furniture and decor for a living. He still enjoys building motorcycles and rides his trike (adapted motorcycle) daily. Keith is most excited about getting to work on the Lokomat! He has done many years of therapy, but has not had the opportunity to work on this piece of equipment, and as you can tell by the smile, he is loving it! Thank you to all those who contribute to the VIP and make the VIP Scholarship Program possible. 10% of all our donations go directly to this program, so everyone plays a part! ![]() Carol was one of VIP's first patients and we are proud to have her as part of the VIP family! This month, the VIP Scholarship Program has awarded Carol two months of free therapy. We are pleased to be able to assist her not only physically, but financially as well after so many years of hard work and fundraising on her part! Carol was born with Cerebral Palsy and has had difficulty moving all her life. She found VIP in 2011 and through therapy has significantly increased her range of motion and overall health. She sees the huge impact that physical therapy has on her daily life and makes it a priority every week. Keep up the hard work Carol! We are all very proud of you! ![]() VIP is honored to share the story of military scholarship recipient, Cristian and family! We have been amazed by Cristian and his family since first meeting. Their determination and dedication to Cristian's health is inspiring and Cristian is one of the most joyful patients we see all day! At the age of 6, Cristian suffered a stroke, which they found was caused by a cancerous brain tumor. He was in a coma for five months and spent eight months at Rady Children's Hospital. ![]() Prior to his stroke, Cristian was an active young boy, enjoying playing soccer, baseball and swimming. After his stroke, it was like starting from scratch for Cristian, both physically and neurologically- he was being redeveloped from the inside-out. And this is when Cristian's family took action. His family began working to stimulate his brain again with massages and ROM exercises right after every bed bath. They would read to him, using baby toys that light up, say the alphabet and practice pushing buttons to work on gross motor and fine motor movements. ![]() His father, Nelson, who is active duty Navy, built a suit that would allow Cristian to practice walking while still in the hospital. The suit attached Cristian to his father in order to help support Cristian's weight while he practiced taking one step at a time. Nelson would promise Cristian dessert if he gave a certain amount of steps! The nurses were amazed at the benefits and results of this suit. They started dancing and cheering Cristian on from the nurses station to encourage Cristian to make it all the way to them at the end of the hall. Cristian has come a long way since those early months and we look forward to seeing continued improvement at VIP! And as you can imagine, Cristian loves being on the Lokomat- we are guessing it reminds him of the suit his father built. This scholarship was given to Daryl (pictured left), who served in the Navy for 30 years on active duty. After his time in the Navy, he worked in the defense industry for 13 years. On September 24, 2015 Daryl suffered a severe stroke, which left him partially paralyzed on the right side. Due to this stroke, he has difficulty with balance, use of his hand, speech and memory. Daryl is highly motivated to improve his quality of life and is excited to begin therapy at VIP! After just a few sessions, he already enjoys his time on the Lokomat and feels it is helping him make great strides. We are thankful for his service to our country and honored to be able to help him in his recovery.
